The University of Florida's
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is also widely known as "The Swamp." Regularly holding over 90,000 fans per game, it is the 10th largest college football stadium by capacity and the largest stadium in the state of Florida, beating out all 3 NFL Stadiums.
In the early 1990s, a legendary Florida Gators coach named Steve Spurrier started "The Swamp" nickname as an intimidation technique for opposing teams. Spurrier said that "...a swamp is where Gators live. We feel comfortable there, but we hope our opponents feel tentative. A swamp is hot and sticky and can be dangerous. Only Gators get out alive."
The Swamp name stuck and fans can hear and see "The Swamp...Only Gators get out alive!" motto before, during and after every University Florida Gators Football game.
